📰 News we're reading

1. Madison's life science vacancy rate at 4% (ibmadison.com) — Madison's life science lab vacancy rate is holding at a tight 4%, signaling strong demand but making it harder for local companies to expand quickly. Most open space is clustered in University Research Park and the west side, while Dane County's growing share of biohealth jobs positions the Madison area competitively against larger national hubs.

2. Dane County confirms first human case of West Nile Virus this year (dailycardinal.com) — Public Health Madison & Dane County has confirmed this season's first local human case of West Nile Virus, reminding Madison-area residents that infected mosquitoes remain active into early fall. Officials stress that most infections are mild or symptom-free but urge people—especially older or immunocompromised residents—to use repellent, wear long sleeves, and remove standing water around homes.

3. Fr. James Kubicki, SJ, presents St. Thérèse Lecture on the Sacred Heart (madisoncatholicherald.org) — Madison-area Catholics recently gathered at Holy Name Heights to hear Fr. James Kubicki speak on devotion to the Sacred Heart as part of a wider consecration effort in the Diocese of Madison. Bishop Donald Hying is urging every local home and family to enthrone the Sacred Heart, with free guides and a full video of the talk available through diocesan websites and YouTube.

4. Ag Secretary signals 'very soon' announcement on diesel costs facing farmers (brownfieldagnews.com) — Farmers gathering at the World Dairy Expo in Madison heard U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins promise a "very soon" announcement aimed at easing the sting of soaring diesel prices. Speaking directly to concerns about fuel costs doubling in a year, she said short-term relief is coming while longer-term plans focus on boosting domestic production and biofuels.

5. Wisconsin's municipalities feeling the pinch of high fuel costs (wpr.org) — Madison residents face higher costs as the city's fuel bill has jumped by more than $220,000 a month, pressuring budgets for core services like fire, police, garbage pickup, and buses. Local leaders say the spike, tied partly to the war with Iran and inflation, could force tough choices next year, even as Madison accelerates investments in electric and hybrid vehicles to cut future fuel volatility.
