Life-threatening waves are expected along Lake Michigan, while storms could bring heavy rain and a brief tornado risk to southern Wisconsin.

(National Weather Service)

MILWAUKEE, WI — Dangerous swimming conditions, heavy rainfall and a low-end tornado threat are all in the forecast Monday for the Milwaukee area and much of southern Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect from midnight Sunday night through Monday evening for Sheboygan, Ozaukee, Milwaukee and Racine counties.

Life-threatening waves of 3 to 5 feet and dangerous currents are expected, the National Weather Service said. Dangerous swimming conditions are expected due to high waves and onshore winds.

"Stay out of the water and away from dangerous areas like piers and breakwalls," the National Weather Service said.

Strong structural and longshore currents are expected, and rip currents are possible.

Storm chances will spread northeast across southern Wisconsin late Sunday night into Monday, according to the National Weather Service. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the region Monday and Monday night.

Locally heavy rain will be possible. Flash flooding may occur where thunderstorms remain stationary or repeatedly move over the same areas, forecasters said.

A brief, isolated spin-up tornado also cannot be ruled out Monday afternoon, according to the hazardous weather outlook.

In Milwaukee, showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday, with showers likely late in the afternoon. Monday’s high is expected to be near 78 degrees, with southeast winds around 10 mph.

Showers and possibly a thunderstorm are expected Monday night, when the chance of precipitation rises to 80 percent.

Hot and humid conditions are expected Tuesday through Friday, with some potential for Heat Advisory conditions by midweek, according to the National Weather Service.

Additional thunderstorm chances are expected through the week, especially Wednesday and Thursday, when some stronger storms may occur.
