Local education leaders, including the mayor and college partners, are promoting a district-wide FAFSA event and on-campus College and Career Centers to help families unlock grants, scholarships, and clearer college cost plans.

Milwaukee police seek suspect in gas station shooting near 64th and Silver Spring (cbs58.com) β Police are asking Milwaukee residents for tips to identify a gunman who shot a man in the arm and thigh after an argument at gas stations near North 64th Street and West Silver Spring Drive on September 16. Investigators believe the suspect likely lives nearby and regularly hangs out at the station, and anonymous tips to Milwaukee Crime Stoppers could earn a cash reward.

4. City leaders push for stricter penalties against people using illegal fireworks (wisn.com) β Milwaukee residents could soon face fines up to $1,000 or 40 days in jail for using illegal fireworks, under a new ordinance that just passed the Common Council's public safety committee. City leaders and the Milwaukee Fire Department say more than 400 fireworks-related calls this year show the problem is disturbing neighborhoods and endangering people. The full council will vote on the proposal Oct. 13.

Milwaukee Islamic Society president speaks on arrest and months-long battle against deportation (wisn.com) β Milwaukee residents are watching closely as Salah Sarsour, president of the Islamic Society of Milwaukee, fights a deportation order after 33 years of legal residence in the U.S. He says the case stems from his advocacy for Palestinian human rights, while the government alleges past immigration paperwork issues. As his lawyers prepare an appeal, Sarsour is speaking out locally and in Washington about his experience.
