Eagles Pride: 5 Unforgettable Athletes From Jerome I. Case High School

From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Mount Pleasant.

Sports run deep in Mount Pleasant, and Jerome I. Case High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Eagles uniform. Today, we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Jerome I. Case High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.


1. Duane Kuiper – MLB Second Baseman (San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Guardians)

A noteworthy Eagle, Kuiper shone on the Case High School baseball field before dominating the fields at Southern Illinois University. He was drafted several times through college by many teams, including the Yankees, but turned them down, eventually going on to play for the San Francisco Giants and the Cleveland Guardians. Today, Kuiper is a popular baseball commentator who has won seven Emmy Awards for Excellence in Broadcasting. (Sources: sabr.org, baseball-reference.com)


2. Samantha Logic – WNBA Point Guard (San Antonio Stars, Atlanta Dream)

Proudly donning the green and gold, Logic excelled as a point guard at Jerome I Case High School basketball, becoming a McDonald’s All-American, Associated Press and Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Wisconsin and even becoming Miss Wisconsin Basketball in her senior year. Logic was accepted into the University of Iowa, where she became a renowned basketball player before playing in the WNBA for the San Antonio Stars and the Atlanta Dream. 3. Jesse Marsch – MLS Midfielder (DC United, Chicago Fire, Chivas USA)

An exceptional eagle, March dominated the Case High School soccer fields before moving on to Princeton University, where he earned All-American honors after scoring 16 goals as a midfielder/forward. Marsch then went on to play fourteen fantastic seasons as a professional soccer player for DC United, Chicago Fire and Chivas USA. Today, he coaches for several European soccer teams. 4. Sarah DeKraay – WSGA Golfer

DeKraay proudly wore the green and gold as the only female athlete on the Case High School golf team and won the WIAA State Girls Championship and the Bull’s Eye Country Club in Wisconsin Rapids. She then played for Indiana University, where she won the Big Ten Runner-Up and the Big Ten Conference Tournament, before becoming a professional golfer, playing on various European and Asian Tours. Today, DeKraay continues to play in various golf leagues and was inducted into the Racine County Sports Hall of Fame in 2016. (Sources: murphydesmond.com, rcsportshall.org)

5. Tom Sorensen – Olympic Volleyball Player

A star volleyball Eagle, Sorensen, was twice named the state's Most Valuable Player and was selected Racine County’s Player of the Year in 1988 and 1989. He then played at Pepperdine University, where he held the school record with 2,207 kills and ranked among the top 10 in hitting percentage, total blocks, digs and service aces. Sorensen then played for the USA national team, winning bronze at the 1994 World Championships, silver at the 1995 Pan American Games and even competing in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
