Schools

Let There Be Play

Project targets a revitalized playground for Schulte Elementary School.

Families at Schulte Elementary School have taken on a big task in committing to revitalize the school’s tired and broken playground equipment.

But the benefit could be worth it – for the school’s students and the neighborhood children.

The current playground equipment has boarded-up sections, is missing rings and doesn’t provide the play space it once did for children, according to Leann Pomeroy, a Schulte mom of two who is spearheading the project with the help of other parents.

“It’s just in sad shape,” Pomeroy said.

Estimated at $40,000, the project will include new equipment and some site work such as painting of existing equipment and asphalt.

Since last month, they’ve raised just over $6000, including a $5000 pledged from Racine Unified School District, Pomeroy said.

The new equipment will be accessible for even the youngest students at the school, which has about 420 children in grades 4k through 5.

Parents are organizing a variety of ways people can help the project.

This summer, volunteers will be needed for a community build of the playground.

Before that, however, people can donate, either through this website or by participating in a Groupon fundraiser available through that site that will benefit the project.

The PTA will also hold a craft fair in December with some of the proceeds going toward the playground project.

People can also donate snipped General Mills box tops at the school which the PTA will turn in to receive funds or by using discounted tickets (attached to this article) for the Wisconsin Christmas Carnival at Jellystone Park that benefit the PTA.

In the spring, fundraising from the annual silent auction and ice cream social will help the project along, plus other fundraisers along the way.

“We’re just looking at everything,” Pomeroy said.
