Speaker Robin Vos Named President-Elect of NCSL

LOS ANGELES, CA — Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos (R-Wis.) has become president-elect of the National Conference of State Legislatures, an organization serving the nation’s 7,383 state lawmakers and more than 20,000 legislative staff, at the annual Legislative Summit in Los Angeles.

Vos, a Republican state assembly representative from Rochester, is the first Wisconsin legislator to hold this leadership position in the national organization.

Vos, the current NCSL vice president, succeeds Toi Hutchinson (D-Ill.), state senator from Illinois. Organizers say that the NCSL alternates leadership between the two parties each year. Vos will be named NCSL president at the 2019 Legislative Summit.

"It's an honor that my fellow colleagues from around the country have chosen me as president-elect of NCSL,” said Vos in a prepared statement. “NCSL is a powerful voice for the states and does an excellent job bringing legislators together from diverse perspectives. I look forward to working with the NCSL Executive Committee and representing Wisconsin as we advocate for a greater reliance on federalism to allow states to innovate and find solutions for the issues facing our country today.”

Vos has served as the 75th speaker of the Wisconsin State Assembly since 2013. In the preceding years, he served consecutively in the Wisconsin State Assembly beginning in 2004.

During his time as speaker, the legislature has approved one of the largest tax cuts in Wisconsin history and became the 25th right-to-work state in the U.S. Vos has also said that he is proud of the bipartisan work in the Assembly where more than 90 percent of the bills passed received some form of bipartisan support.

His speaker's task forces have developed important legislation on topics including mental health, rural schools, Alzheimer's and dementia, urban education, youth workforce readiness and foster care.

Vos lives in Rochester, Wisconsin where he operates a variety of businesses in southeastern Wisconsin.
