As Snow Mounts, the City Steps In for Its Residents

The city's public works department is prepared and organized to handle this winter's snow.

As any resident of Muskego probably knows, snow is a big deal in Wisconsin this time of year. As the new year begins, January and February are usually the months where the news is checked to make sure school isn't cancelled and drivers are more cautious.

In the past few days, Muskego has seen its share of snow. It piles up on the streets, and temperatures are expected to plunge, causing ice to coat the roads and make driving not only difficult, but dangerous.

Smaller communities may need their residents to help dig out after a storm, but Muskego residents only need to worry about digging out their own properties. The city has a solid team of plowers to keep the roads clear and the driving safe.

Wayne Delikat, the head of the Department of Public Works, reassures Muskego residents that they only have one responsibility: their homes. “The residents are only responsible for their driveways,” he says. “We have no sidewalks, and our guys take care of clearing out the roads.”

Even the storm drains, which are important for keeping the melting snow from flooding the roads and damaging cars, are cleared by their team.

While some recent years have seen salt supplies shrink due to ever-increasing snowfalls and record low temperatures, Delikat says Muskego is prepared for the snowfall of the season, and salt supplies are not an issue.

Despite this heavy workload, Delikat says the workers don't hold any grudges against the snowfalls of Wisconsin winters. “It's their job. They don't mind it.”
