Craig Lends Support to Budget
The late night passage of the governor's budget bill in the assembly is called a 'marked improvement,' but Representative admits there's more work to be done.

Representative David Craig, whose 83rd District includes Muskego, has issued a statement after the State Assembly passed the $66 billion state budget early on Thursday morning, sending the bill to the Senate, where it awaits debate there.
The vote was 60-to-38 along party lines and came at about 3 a.m., following a debate on the floor that stretched for nearly 13 hours. Democrats had also introduced 40 amendments to the budget all of which were rejected by assembly Republicans.
“The 2011-2013 State Budget provides a marked improvement over the budgets of the previous administration," Craig said in a release. "It is important to remember that our work as a legislature is far from complete; we must continue the fight to reduce government spending in Wisconsin to lessen the crushing tax burden on our citizens in order to achieve a lasting economic recovery. This budget illustrates our commitment to attaining true fiscal responsibility and more transparent accounting.”

Craig also pointed to a provision in the budget that will allow a 'mascot law' to be changed. He has been an outspoken opponent on the law, which can compel a school to change its mascot if it is determined that it's discriminatory against Native American groups.
“I was particularly pleased that my Assembly colleagues included a provision authored by myself, Representatives Chris Kapenga (R-Delafield) and Steve Nass (R-Town of La Grange) and Senator Mary Lazich (R- New Berlin) which will extend the deadline for compliance for school districts that are subject to an order from DPI to change their mascot. Extending the deadline for compliance to January 15, 2013 provides the Legislature more time to change the state law that was enacted last session.”
