Finance Committee Approves Purchase and Demolition of Home

Deemed on a floodplain and 'a good candidate' for supporting funds, Muskego home clears a hurdle to be purchased and torn down.

The Finance Committee voted to approve the purchase of a home on Woods Road, which has suffered two major flooding incidents over the past two years.  The homeowners have spend $75,000 and more than four months displaced from the home as a result of floods in 2008 and again in 2010.

Dave Simpson, City Engineer, explained that this home was the "one property that appears to be a potential grant recipient candidate," and that it had "experienced some of the worst flooding in the Muskego."

The Hazard Mitigation Grant has become available to the city and the home, located in the W18100 block of Janesville Road, could be purchased by the city with the help of the funding available in the grant.  The total estimated project cost is $165,550, and with the grant portion of 87.5 percent would mean the city would only be responsible for $21,000 of the cost.

In addition, Simpson pointed out that additional funds would be available through the Metropolitan Milwaukee Sewerage District Private Property Inflow and Infiltration (MMSD PPII) reduction program.

Simpson estimated that the city's responsibility for acquiring the property could fall to $9,000, based on a similar circumstance that occurred in a different community.  The recommendation will come before the Common Council at their next meeting on July 12.
