Muskego Students Participate in Global Youth Summit

Students offer suggestions and solutions on how to expand opportunities in school to help them prepare for the future.

Students from nearly 20 high schools across the state including five students and two teachers from Muskego High School, told educators they wanted more opportunities for learning languages and experiencing other cultures during the first Wisconsin Global Youth Summit held in Madison on February 23.

Thomas Lescoute (AFS student from France), Amy Rothwell, Emma Schnittka,  Natalie Sobierajski, and Petyon  Tebon all represented MHS as well as teachers Paula Johnson-Fox and Kellie Michels.

During the full-day summit, 80 plus public and private high-school students worked with University of Wisconsin-Madison students involved in the Adventure Learning Programs on international activities. International Reach students facilitated small-group discussions on what it means to be a global citizen and what students can do to expand global education. Students also learned a few words and phrases of another language during an activity facilitated by the UW-Madison Language Institute.

“We know that students in our high schools have more international interactions than any students before them thanks to the World Wide Web,” said State Superintendent Tony Evers. “The Global Youth Summit gave them an opportunity to share what they need from their schools to prepare for their global future. And, we wanted their teachers to network solutions for expanding global education.”

Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction hosted the event in cooperation with Global Wisconsin Inc., International Professionals Inc., the Division of International Studies at UW-Madison, and the State Superintendent’s Statewide International Education Council, chaired by Bousquet.
