Teens Build a Better Resume - and a Better World

Board offers local teens a chance to create a teen-friendly culture and improve their leadership skills.

Stacy Tikkanen is a high school junior who thinks leadership can be fun, and she’s inviting teens to try it by joining Muskego’s Teen Advisory Board.

“It’s a fun way to improve yourself, develop leadership, and learn how to make connections with adults,”  Tikkanen said.  As Board Chairperson, she likes the idea that teens get a voice in city life:  They bring ideas to the table, plan and coordinate events, and help with community activities.

And their contributions are significant:  The Teen Board originated – and secured funding for - the InPro Skateboard Park in Muskego, Tikkanen said.  In the past they’ve also organized teen dances, championed movies geared to older kids at Veteran’s Park, run Muskego’s Teen Idol Contest in the summer, and filled timekeeping and other roles at the Women’s Club Forum during elections.

Tikkanen thinks serving on the Board looks good on the resume, and gives teens a sense of responsibility and self-respect.  “It doesn’t take a lot of time,” she said, but “gives a voice to teens and youth by creating events they want to participate in.”

Any teen in Muskego is welcome to join. For more information please email Stacy Tikkanen at dance4joy3000@wi.rr.com.
