OAK CREEK, WI — IKEA announced Monday its Oak Creek location will be participating in a furniture buyback program through the end of 2021 alongside numerous other sustainability initiatives.

People who are enrolled in the global retailer's rewards program, IKEA Family, will be eligible to sell their gently used IKEA furniture back to the store in order to give it a second life, the company said in a news release. The returned furniture will then be sold in the company's "As-Is" section at reduced prices to create a more affordable and sustainable furniture option for others, the news release said.

"IKEA is on a journey to become a circular and climate positive business by 2030. As part of this goal, we are proud to launch the IKEA Green Friday campaign and execute the national rollout of our Buy Back & Resell service in the U.S. this year," said Javier Quiñones, IKEA U.S. President and Chief Sustainability Officer. "We want to help create a sustainable movement in society, and inspire our customers to acquire, care for and pass on IKEA products in more sustainable ways."

Alongside the furniture buyback program, the Oak Creek IKEA will be celebrating "Green Friday" the entire month of November a section of the store dedicated to products sourced through sustainable methods. The section will be called the "Sustainable Living Shop."

Additionally, certain discounts will be offered to IKEA Family members from Nov. 26-29 on certain sustainable home products and food products. The discounts will be focused on products that combat pollutants, use renewable resources or come from recycled materials, the news release said.

The buyback program comes after a pilot program took place in September at an IKEA location in Pennsylvania.

"We are excited to share that the Buy Back & Resell pilot in Conshohocken had positive results – 100% of product brought in was resold versus recycled," said Jennifer Keesson, Country Sustainability Manager, IKEA U.S. "By expanding the service to more stores across the U.S., we hope to inspire more IKEA Family members to participate and further showcase how sustainable living can be obtainable and affordable for the many."

Oak Creek is part of over 30 other stores across the country participating in the furniture buyback program.
