Oak Creek Luxury Apartment Proposal Inches Forward

OAK CREEK, WI — The Oak Creek Common Council approved a zoning change request for a luxury development proposed near 8100 27th Street Tuesday.

The zoning change was one of the necessary steps to allow the 218-unit development to forge ahead. Decker Properties requested the Common Council change the land from agricultural zoning to multifamily residential.

The apartment complex has been in the works for years now. It was initially proposed in 2018, Patch reported. Since that initial proposal, some things have changed, but much has remained the same.

The apartment complex, called "The Oaks," would bring upwards of 200 new apartment units to the area, a mix of one, two and three bedrooms. It would also include a host of amenities such as a clubhouse and a pool, the plan reviewed Tuesday showed.

The apartments and clubhouse would be spread out across ten buildings. An earlier plan listed vinyl as one of the main exterior building materials, however discussion at the most recent Plan Commission meeting showed that wasn't up to code.

The buildings are largely planned to be clad in brick and masonry, documents submitted to the city by Decker Properties show.

In the meeting, Alderman Steven Kurkowski commented about the affordability of these apartments, and if residents would be able to rent them at the proposed rates, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported.

“We seem to be building a lot of luxury apartments in the city,” Kurkowski said. “Two thousand a month is more than I pay for my mortgage.”
