How Rumors Can Impact A Business

A discussion of how negative rumors can impact a business.

In an editorial in a local paper several years ago, there was an opinion expressed by the writer that we here at Shop Port, Think Local agree with wholeheartedly.

The writer, in essence, said that negative talk about a business or the local economy in general is bad for the community. The premise is this: when people feel secure/happy/prosperous, they tend to spend money, and the economy therefore thrives. However, when people have anxiety about the economy, they tighten their wallets, unintentionally starving the economy of the dollars it requires.

That’s where we at Shop Port, Think Local come in. We believe negative talk undermines the economic climate, making things worse. But together, Shop Port, Think Local promotes positive events and dialog, hoping to infuse the Port community with a boost. If you look for it, you’ll find bleak economic news every single day. But if you look closer at what is being accomplished and the good news that IS available in our community, you’ll take a step toward encouraging our humble little community to bigger and better outcomes.

There is so much to be proud of in this community. Visitors are nearly always enamored of our beautiful lakefront community. We’d love to get your ideas and thoughts about what we can do to improve your shopping experience at Sentry or your dining experience in our Shop Local restaurants. If you have a special request, let us know! Shop Port, Think Local believes we have much to strive for but much to celebrate already.

With that said, several of our businesses (namely Sanfilippo's Sentry and Sweetheart Cakes) have been plagued with rumors that they are closing. I spoke to the owners of both businesses and both want to stress that they are not closing.  They appreciate the support of the community and look forward to serving you long into the future.  We wish you a Happy Spring full of color and excitement.
