📰 News we're reading

1. City, county housing authorities won't merge (newmedia-wi.com subscription) — Shawano’s city and county housing authorities have decided not to merge for now, citing upcoming retirements of both directors and the complexity of a multi-year process. Instead, they’ll search for a new city director while continuing to offer public housing and voucher programs that help low-income residents across Shawano and surrounding municipalities find affordable homes.

2. New Fair Passes to Modernize Entry at Shawano County Fair (tchdailynews.com) — Heading to the Shawano County Fair this year, you’ll notice a new electronic pass system at the gates, with every wristband or membership card scanned once per day. Organizers are asking fairgoers to be patient as volunteers learn the scanners, promising smoother entry after the first few days.

3. More Than a Game: Shawano Youth Soccer Relies on Community Coaches (tchdailynews.com) — More than 300 kids from Shawano and nearby communities are suiting up for Shawano Youth Soccer, but the league depends heavily on parents stepping up as volunteer coaches. Leaders stress you don’t need soccer experience—just a willingness to learn, use provided training, and help kids grow, compete, and have fun on the field.

4. Community invited to health assessment meeting (newmedia-wi.com) — Shawano and Menominee County residents are invited to help shape local health priorities at a Community Health Assessment meeting on Aug. 17 at the College of Menominee Nation Cultural Learning Center. Participants will review health data, discuss emerging issues, and identify top needs that will guide future public health efforts. Attendance is free, with both in-person and Microsoft Teams options available.

5. Menominee County seeks to develop land (newmedia-wi.com) — Menominee County and the Menominee Indian Tribe are planning new development in Keshena and Neopit so residents don’t have to drive to Shawano or Antigo for basic needs. Using a $60,000 grant, they’re exploring options like affordable housing, retail shops, and eco-friendly design. Draft plans and renderings are expected to reach county planners by late October.
