Would You Make A Good School Board Member?

Officials say commitment is the No. 1 quality they are seeking in applicants interested in assuming the School Board seat recently vacated by Michael Mishlove.

In response to the resignation of Michael Mishlove, the Shorewood School Board discussed its desired qualifications Tuesday for applicants who want to assume the position.

“Anybody who is interested, willing to learn, and willing to be committed to the job should apply,” said School Board member Ruth Treisman.

But, the primary attribute officials are seeking is commitment.

The board is looking for someone who will dedicate the necessary time and energy into performing a quality job in the seat. The board emphasized the job is not just attending regular meetings; there is a lot more that goes into it.

“I’m really looking for chemistry … a person who is willing to listen and learn,” said Board President Rob Reinhoffer.

The members also mentioned that they are looking for someone who can identify with student interests while serving on the board.

“I think we should try to find somebody with a student-centered focus when analyzing issues,” said Board Vice President Colin Plese.

Mishlove resigned in October due what he said where the dynamics as a result of changes on the School Board. Mishlove served on the school board for more than six years, where he played a role in labor negotiations.

“I think it’d be nice to have another woman on the board … as well as representation from Atwater,” added board member David Cobb.

Applicants must be a Shorewood resident and eligible to vote. Applicants should submit a letter of interest postmarked no later than Nov. 30.

The board will conduct interviews of applicants in December. Officials hope to appoint a new board member during a meeting on Dec. 11. The new member will serve on the School Board through April 2013.

The candidate will have the opportunity to run for re-election in the April 2013 school board election. There are two other school board seats up for election in April 2013.
