Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission 2015 Annual Report reports sharp increases in shootings

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee has seen a sharp increase in shootings and homicides over previous years according to a report released to day from the Milwaukee Homicide Review Commission.

The Annual Report tooks at causes and risk factors behind homicides and non-fatal shootings in the city of Milwaukee, according to a release by the Health Department.

“After a steady decline in homicides over the last decade, 2015 was a very deadly year for our city and cities across the country,” said Mayor Tom Barrett, according to a CBS 58 report. “To address this, we must work together and use all of the tools available including having quality data to better understand where to target our prevention work.”

Here are 7 statistics from the report, which is viewable here.

  1. 2015 saw a 69% increase in homicide victims over last year.
  2. Drug Related homicides increased by 92%.
  3. Homicide rate rose to 24.3 per 100,000 inhabitants.
  4. Non-fatal shooting rate rose to 106.1 per 100,000 inhabitants.
  5. 2,679 years lost to homicide in Milwaukee in 2015, based on average life expectancy.
  6. Black males alone ages 15-24, are victimized at a shooting rate of 1,109 per 100,000.
  7. Black males alone ages 15-25 are victimized at a homicide rate of 187 per 100,000.
