WISCONSIN -- Less than a week remains to file income tax returns, and the Wisconsin Department of Revenue recommends that taxpayers not wait until the last minute to file. Returns must be received or postmarked by midnight on Monday, April 15.

"We process around three million returns annually," Department of Revenue Secretary Peter Barca said in a statement to Patch. "Around a half million returns came in the last two weeks. Our season total now stands at 2.3 million, so activity has been brisk. We're anticipating another half million taxpayers to file in the remaining days, and we expect the rest will likely file for extension."

Electronic Resources

Download the WI Revenue mobile app - available in the Apple and Android app stores - and watch tax assistance videos, check the status of your return or refund, find VITA sites, take action if you received an ID Verification letter, and more.

Better Know A Phone Scammer

State officials want to remind the public that the Department of Revenue will not contact residents by telephone or email regarding a income tax return. If the department needs more information to verify items on a person's return, the department will contact that person by letter.

Need An Extension?

The Wisconsin Department of Revenue recommends filing an extension request with the IRS if a filer won't make the April 15 deadline. Residents must request an extension from the Internal Revenue Service by April 15 to avoid late filing penalties.

Members of the public are directed to go to the IRS website at www.irs.gov and search "extension" for more information. Taxpayers who file an extension request with the IRS automatically receive an extension from the state.

State officials recommend keeping a copy of the IRS federal extension application (Form 4868) for records.
