911 Dispatcher Helps Deliver Baby Jack into the World — During a Snow Storm

A Waukeha mom who went into labor earlier than expected got a helping hand from her husband - and a 911 dispatcher.

WAUKESHA, WI — 911 dispatchers have to be calm under pressure. Even in the most extreme situations, they have to communicate clearly between the public and the public safety workers charged with their protection.

On Wednesday, mother Chistina Makal McCaffrey arrived at the Waukesha Police Department with her baby boy Jack to say "thank you." Because of the calm and cool demeanor of 911 dispatch operator Amanda Huenik, McCaffrey's son Jack was delivered safely under trying circumstances on the early morning of Jan. 31.

According to a CBS 58 report, McCaffrey went into labor at 1 a.m. while at home. A driving snowstorm raged outside, and she wasn't expecting to give birth at that early hour - she was scheduled for a labor induction later that day.

McCaffrey's husband Jason called 911, stating that his wife was in active labor and delivery was imminent.

911 dispatcher Christina Huenik was able to direct Jason over the phone, and walk him step-by-step through what was needed to deliver his child as police and first responders were on their way.

Moments later, a police sergeant responded to assist. A short time later City of Waukesha Fire Department arrived and provided medical assistance to the family.

"My husband handled his cool, and you guys walked him through it so amazingly," Christina McCaffery said in a WISN 12 report. “This little man, he cried right away, and we are just so blessed to be living in such a great community."

A Rare Call

Of note, this was Dispatcher Amanda Huenink’s 3rd month in training. Her Dispatch Trainer, Katie Chojnacki, was present with her overseeing this call.

According to police, a 911 dispatcher can go their entire career and not have a call like this, where they actually stay on the phone to assist in the delivery.

Police said this delivery was successful because Dispatcher Huenink, Communications Training Officer Chojnacki, Police Sergeant Kyle Bergner, and the Waukesha Fire Department all worked together on this critical call.
