Amateur Radio Field Day

Emergency Communications

Today's communications networks are taken for granted they will always work, allowing for a little inconvenient downtime. What happens when tragedy strikes and the landline and mobile networks are wiped out; the power grid is down? Sound familiar? Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria made heroes out of Amateur Radio operators who practice for these circumstances to provide health and welfare communications for devastated areas.

This weekend is Field Day 2019 when amateur radio clubs across the USA mobilize and establish temporary communications command posts to practice set-up for short and long range communications, and hone their operating skills with digital and voice modes to get the message through when no other option may exist.

Members of the Westside Radio Club will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, June 22 – 23 at “The Farm” on Saylesville Road in Genessee. The Westside Radio Club is a group of amateur radio operators located primarily in Waukesha County (Wisconsin) who have a collective and passionate interest in sharing knowledge and activating radio communications with various purposes and modes ranging from satellites to portable operations. We fully participate in numerous group activations including Field Day, special event stations, and ad hoc club gatherings.
