An evening with the author of “Flashes of War” will be Thursday, Oct. 17, 2013, at Carroll University. The collection of short stories that feature experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan is written by Katey Schultz, and was recently named 2013 Book of the Year in the category of literary fiction by the Military Writers Society of America.
The reading and discussion of “Flashes of War” begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Oak Room, located in the lower level of New Hall at 200 E. College Ave., Waukesha. This event is free and open to the public.
In the collection, Schultz questions the stereotypes of modern war by bearing witness to the shared struggles of all who are touched by it. “Flashes of War” leaves aside judgment, bringing us closer to a broader understanding of war by focusing on individuals, their motivations and their impossible decisions.

Schultz grew up in Portland, Ore., and is most recently from Celo, N.C. She is a graduate of the Pacific University with a Master of Fine Arts degree in writing, and a recipient of the Linda Flowers Literary Award from the North Carolina Humanities Council. This is her first book.
Carroll University’s Office of Student Affairs sponsors the event, which is part of Carroll’s yearlong exploration of Humanity. In classrooms, workshops, lectures, discussions and through the performing arts, the campus community will examine how war, ethics, science, religion, hunger, abuse and lack of civility affect our humanity, both individually and collectively.
