Pamela Hicks, a graduate student in education at Carroll University, will walk 39 miles June 1-2, 2013, to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research and support for those battling the disease.

Hicks, a Racine native who lives in Milwaukee, will join thousands of walkers for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Chicago. She was inspired to participate in the event in honor of her mother, a 20-year breast cancer survivor. The 39-mile distance represents the length of 1.5 marathons. Walkers also have the option of walking 26.2 miles, the distance of a marathon.

The Avon Walk Chicago is produced by the Avon Foundation for Women and is one of eight weekend walks in 2013.

Hicks has committed to raising $1,800. Donations can be made at www.avonwalk.org.
