In Cruz County, One Man Sees Big Trump Potential

Waukesha County voters would have to vote very differently for that to happen, but one political leader says it's going to happen.

WAUKESHA — Speaker Paul Ryan may not be ready to support presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump, but one local political leader is embracing the idea of Trump — in a big way.

According to a report by the Lake Country Reporter, Waukesha County Republican Party Chairman John Macy is confident that the county GOP organization can deliver at least 180,000 votes on election day for Donald Trump, which would be about 68 percent of the vote in the county.

"I think once Republicans are educated about the alternatives — including the possibility of having a liberal Supreme Court for the rest of their lives — they will vote for Donald Trump," Macy said to the Lake Country reporter.

For that to happen, though, voters in Waukesha County are going to have to do a literal about-face from the April primary in which voters obliterated Trump at the polls. Here's how the numbers broke down on Tuesday, April 5:

  • Ted Cruz — 60.97% — 75,123
  • Donald Trump — 22.06% — 27,186
  • John Kasich — 15.03% — 18,521
  • Marco Rubio — 0.96% — 1,181
  • Ben Carson — 0.28% — 34

According to the Lake Country Reporter, Macy is among 18 delegates going to the GOP national convention in July — three from each of the six congressional districts that Cruz won — who are committed to Cruz on the first ballot and each succeeding roll call, until Cruz receives less that 30 percent of the vote.

According to Fivethirtyeight.com — a leading election forecaster and analysis website, Trump was running at 98 percent of his target to get the required 1,237 delegates needed to secure the GOP presidential nomination.

Based on this available data, there stands a good chance Macy is going to get his chance to bend the ears of Cruz supporters this fall. The question is: will they swing over to Trump? And will it be in the amount he predicts?

Stay tuned!
