Driver Told Police He Was Plugging In Phone Cord: Police

Police say a driver who ran over a fire hydrant on St. Paul was plugging in his phone cord at the time of the crash.

WAUKESHA, WI -- A driver who destroyed a fire hydrant on W. St. Paul Ave. told officers that he was plugging in a phone charger cord at the time of his fateful foray off the road, police said.

According to police reports, officers were dispatched to the intersection f S. Moreland Blvd. and W. St. Paul Ave. just before 11 p.m. on Nov. 16 on a report of an accident.

When police arrived at the scene, they saw that the fire hydrant located on W. St. Paul about 15 feet north of the intersection had been knocked off its mooring and was completely unusable.

Police said the driver's airbag deployed during the crash. When police questioned the man, he reportedly told officers that he was uninjured, but veered off the road at the time he was plugging in a cell phone power cord while he was behind the wheel.
