Buddhism is not just a religion. It is also a philosophical tradition that delves into questions concerning the nature of human existence. The Buddha himself avoided metaphysical inquiry. He believed compassionate activity was more important than philosophical speculation. But thinkers have plumbed the depths to elucidate his teachings. This course surveys the development of Buddhist thought. Beginning with the teachings of the Buddha himself, we explore the early realist schools of Hinayana Buddhism. Next we analyze later positions held by the idealist schools of Mahayana Buddhism. Finally, we witness the great flowering of Buddhist thought in Zen philosophy. A knowledge of Buddhism is not necessary, but helpful. An interest in Buddhist philosophy is essential. In the end we hope to find answers to life’s great questions from a Buddhist perspective. 1.2 CEU
