This 3-part course provides a broad overview of the decorative styles of the Nineteenth Century with special emphasis on France, England, and America, and provides an introduction to craftsman and tastemakers of the century. Class includes a visit to Ten Chimneys, once the summer home of Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne and now a museum and National Historic Landmark.

Part One: The Neoclassical Styles: 1800-1850

A world transformed by political and industrial revolutions looked to the stability of antiquity for inspiration. Rooms and objects designed in the Empire, Federal, Regency and Biedermeier styles will be discussed, their defining characteristics identified, and key craftsman and tastemakers introduced. .2 CEU

Part Two: The Picturesque Styles: 1850-1900

A world of confidence and material wealth delighted in the infinite variety of styles to choose from for decorating your home. Rooms and objects designed in the Victorian Rococo and Elizabethan Revivals as well as the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts reform movements will be discussed, their defining characteristic identified and key craftsman and tastemakers introduced. .2 CEU

Twentieth Century Revivals: Field Trip to Ten Chimneys

Conclude with a visit to Ten Chimneys where numerous examples of the styles discussed in the class can be seen. Ten Chimney’s interiors provide an exceptional example of how the objects and styles of the nineteenth century were used in a new and daring ways by those confident enough to appreciate the "Victorian" when modernism dominated.
