The common thread among people who practice any form of fitness regime is that they are doing something positive for themselves. So, what happens when that idea is taken a step further, and the benefits of maintaining health are extended out to the community?
The answer, according to ShaoLin Center, is Karma Yoga. Shari Kleppe, head yoga instructor at the martial and healing arts school, believed that the connection between yoga and community outreach was a very natural one. “Yoga is much more than stretching and flexibility; the heart of it is meditation, mindfulness, and healing for mankind. All we needed was an outlet for that well of positive energy.”
What makes it Karma Yoga? “Basically, it is a good deeds class,” explained Kleppe. “Each session is free, but donations are being accepted to benefit the FOOD Pantry of Waukesha County.”

Kleppe and Jackie Landers, LCSW and certified yoga instructor, collaborated to initiate Karma Yoga at ShaoLin Center. The first class was held on October 6th, and an impressive number of people participated. “It was a great experience,” Kleppe said. “Jackie is a wonderful teacher; her classes are very peaceful and relaxing.”
ShaoLin Center, located at 400 Travis Lane in Waukesha, is offering Karma Yoga every Sunday evening, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m., through November 10th. Cash and non-perishable food items are welcome and encouraged, but not required for participation. The classes are open to the public, as well. Kleppe stated: “It doesn’t matter if someone has never done yoga before, or practiced for years… it’s about gathering together to make a difference for ourselves, and the community. We hope to see many new faces in the next five weeks.”
