Milwaukee Man Pleads Guilty Of Homicide In Deadly Accident

Brett Hartley, 22, pleaded guilty to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. Two years ago, he struck and killed two cyclists.

WAUKESHA, WI -- Brett Hartley, 22, pleaded guilty on Monday in Waukesha County Circuit Court to two counts of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. The charges were downgraded from second-degree reckless homicide.

The collision took place on June 6th, 2015, around 6:30 a.m. in Muskego. Hartley was driving people home from a party and hit the two cyclists - Paul Brown, 45, of Franklin, and Anthony Oliver, 54, of Oak Creek. Brown died at the scene and Oliver died after being transported to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, according to a Journal Sentinel article.

Hartley had a blood alcohol level of 0.05, according to court documents, and stated that he had been awake for 24 hours at the time of the incident. Though under the legal intoxication limit, Hartley was underage at the time.

He called 911 immediately after the incident. This transcript, released by the police, was obtained from a Fox6 article.

Dispatch: "Muskego 911, what's your emergency?"
Caller: "Paramedics please. I fell asleep behind the wheel and I hit two bikers."
Dispatch: "Okay. Okay. Hold on a minute. Just hold on, okay?"
Caller: "They were biking and then ah... I, I fell asleep and I woke up and then I hit two people."

Hartley will be sentenced on June 22nd.
