Narcan Saves Deputy's Life At Drug-Related Traffic Stop: Report

Officials say 2 deputies were making a traffic stop in Waukesha County when they were exposed to a substance that caused a medical emergency

WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI — A Waukesha County Sheriff's deputy was administered Narcan after he was exposed to apparent narcotics during a traffic stop Monday. Sheriff officials in Waukesha say he and a fellow deputy who made the traffic stop were hospitalized and later released.

According to officials, a Deputy from the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office pulled over a car on I-94 at South Calhoun Road in Brookfield just after 9 p.m. Monday. During the course of the investigation, a second Waukesha Sheriff’s Deputy arrived to assist, and two men who were inside the car from the traffic stop were arrested, according to reports.

Sheriff's officials said the driver was arrested for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence as well as other drug-related charges. The passenger was also arrested on drug-related charges and both people were transported to the local hospital for medical clearance as a precautionary measure.

According to reports, during a search of the vehicle, both deputies were reportedly exposed to an unknown substance located in the vehicle. A medical emergency ensued, and one of the deputies was administered Narcan at the scene. Both deputies were transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure and later released.

A portion of I-94 was closed for several hours while the investigation continued. Wisconsin State Patrol, City of Brookfield Fire Department, Waukesha County Metropolitan Drug Unit and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigations were on the scene to assist in the investigation.
