SDNB Elementary Students Gain Career Exploration Experience During 'Jump Into Your Future' Days
Volunteers, including many SDNB parents, "show and tell" their students about their occupations.
Earlier this month, the School District of New Berlin enjoyed its fourth and final Jump Into Your Future Day of the 2016-17 school year, a program designed to give elementary students in grades kindergarten through sixth a career exploration experience.
Volunteers, including many SDNB parents, “show and tell” their students about their occupations. Among this year’s volunteers were a Coast Guard member, an architect, a truck driver, an archaeologist, a video game designer and many others.
Poplar Creek piloted Jump Into Your Future Day back in 2014-15. The program expanded in 2015-16 to all four elementary schools with partnership assistance from Junior Achievement of Wisconsin. This year’s first Jump Into Your Future day was at Orchard Lane in December, Ronald Reagan and Poplar Creek held their events in April, and Elmwood concluded the series May 5.

“We are glad that, with the help of Junior Achievement of Wisconsin, that we’ve been able to expand this program for all students,” said Royce Lindner, Director of Elementary Teaching and Learning. “Students look forward to this day every year. The volunteers are engaging and interesting, and give all of our students a great glimpse into all sorts of careers they might not have ever thought about before.”
The Jump Into Your Future program is a component of the district’s College and Career Ready and Academic and Career Planning efforts. The district strives to ensure that all students are college and career ready upon high school graduation. Career and technical education is a critical part of accomplishing this goal, regardless of a student’s post-secondary pursuits.

With that in mind, the district makes a concerted effort to provide students with career and technical education opportunities through a continuum of experiences throughout their K12 education, including Jump Into Your Future Day, Junior Achievement BizTown visits for elementary students, Career Days and Industry Tours for secondary students, and more.
