These are the 20 Safest Cities in Wisconsin – 2017

Security company SafeWise ranked the top 20 safest communities, based on FBI statistics.

WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI — The Waukesha town of Oconomowoc has once again been named as the safest city in Wisconsin, according to security company SafeWise, an honor the town received in 2016 as well.

For every 1,000 people in Oconomowoc, the chance of falling victim to a violent crime is only 0.04, SafeWise writes. The chance of a property crime is 2.20 per 1,000.

While Safewise notes that the twenty cities on the list exemplify Wisconsin’s strong commitment to public safety, Wisconsin is also one of the most proactive states when it comes to combating opioid addiction—a problem that has become a national epidemic.

Eighteen of the cities on the list reported fewer than ten violent crimes, according to the FBI’s most recent data. And two of them—Bayside and the Village of East Troy—had zero violent crimes.

Overall, there were fewer than ninety total violent crimes reported among all twenty of the state’s safest cities. In addition, every city on our list boasts violent crime and property crime rates that are below both the national and state averages. To top it off, Oregon and Muskego are also among the top 100 safest cities in the country.

How Safewise Chose the Safest Cities in Wisconsin

To identify the safest cities in Wisconsin, Safewise reviewed the most recent FBI Crime Report statistics from 2015, along with population data. They eliminated all cities with fewer than 3,500 residents as well as any cities that failed to submit a complete crime report to the FBI.

If your city made the list, share the news by embedding the “Wisconsin Safest Cities” badge on your site. Click here to get the code, then just copy and paste.

From there, Safewise evaluated the remaining cities, narrowing them down based on the number of reported violent crimes (aggravated assault, murder, rape, and robbery) and property crimes (burglary, arson, larceny-theft, and motor vehicle theft) in each city. To further level the playing field, they calculated the likelihood of these crimes occurring out of 1,000 people in each city.
