Thoughts on Movement (Part 2)

The second defining characteristic of a movement is commonality.

Humans are incredibly diverse creatures. Different heritages breed different cultures. Different traditions. Different mannerisms. Different forms of expression. We're all so vastly different.

But...

When a movement begins, you can see this diversity begin to work as a cohesive whole toward a common goal. A goal which transcends any boundary we may have separating us from our neighbors. That is why movements can be incredibly powerful.

They show us a glimpse of what we could be, were we not riddled with divisions. Division itself isn't bad. It is generally a great thing to be proud of your heritage, or your traditions, or your faith system. It is when those divisions inhibit us from acknowledging what is central to our existence, that we are first and foremost human, that divisions turn to barriers. To barbed wire fences, and brick walls.

What I love about the Give Art movement is that we are united in one common cause, to bring freedom to those who have had it taken from them. To stand in solidarity with humanity and say simply this; you are another person, that is enough to move on your behalf.

Our commonality is the blood that runs through our veins, and the idea that every life is sacred, and should be protected and allowed the freedoms we are so privileged to enjoy.
