Waukesha Circuit Court Race Heating Up

Campaign finance data shows Laura Lau is the fundraising leader among Waukesha County residents. Jack Melvin earned a new endorsement.

WAUKESHA COUNTY, WI —New campaign finance reports, show that Waukesha Circuit Court Judge candidate Laura Lau is the fundraising leader among Waukesha County residents in the race for Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge, Branch 12. Her opponent, Jack Melvin, is reporting that he's added another notable figure to his list of endorsements.

According to the latest campaign finance report, Lau’s Waukesha County supporters outpace her opponent 206 to 9. Lau raised $24,215.00 from Waukesha County donors, excluding herself and family members. Her opponent, Jack Melvin, raised $1,946.13 from 9 Waukesha County donors, excluding himself and family members. Total amounts raised for Lau, $31,562.00, and Melvin, $17,474.70.

“I believe the financial support for my campaign to this point reflects voters’ respect for law enforcement and their belief in my county court experience to serve our community as a Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge,” Lau said in a prepared statement.

Lau says she has been endorsed by Waukesha Co. Sheriff Eric Severson, Waukesha County District Attorney Sue Opper, Former Waukesha County Sheriffs Dan Trawicki and Arnie Moncada, the Waukesha Deputy Sheriff’s Association and several Waukesha County municipal judges and police chiefs.

Melvin is reporting that he has gained the endorsement of retired Supreme Court Justice David Prosser in his bid to earn the trust of voters in the election, which will be held Tuesday, April 3.

“Jack Melvin stood with me during my successful 2011 recount for the Wisconsin Supreme Court, playing a key legal role in both Waukesha and Milwaukee Counties. Jack Melvin has unusually rich experiences in life and as an attorney. His work as a military prosecutor and as defense counsel in civil cases throughout the country make him an excellent choice for the Waukesha Circuit Court,” Justice David Prosser said in a prepared statements.

Prosser is the latest judge to throw his support behind Melvin. Others include, Judge Mark Gundrum—Court of Appeals, Judge Michael Aprahamian—Waukesha Circuit Court, Judge Maria Lazar—Waukesha Circuit Court and Judge Mike Maxwell—Waukesha Circuit Court.

Lau and Melvin are running to succeed Waukesha County Circuit Court Branch 12 Judge Kathryn Foster. Foster has served on the Waukesha County bench since 1988, and will not seek another six-year term. Election for this race is Tuesday, April 3.
