The 35-year-old man fled during a traffic stop, only to drive through backyards and ending up stuck in a cornfield, authorities said.

COLD SPRING, WI — A 35-year-old Waukesha man was taken into custody in the Town of Cold Spring after authorities say the man fled during a traffic stop, only to drive through backyards and ending up stuck in a cornfield.

Jefferson County Sheriff's officials arrested Dennis Kirkland, who now faces charges of fleeing and eluding an officer, and was cited for speeding and operating after revocation.

According to a report from the Daily Jefferson County Union, an arrest warrant had been issued for Kirkland after he failed to appear in court for a traffic violation.

According to Jefferson County Sheriff Captain Jerry Haferman, deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Kirkland's vehicle on an apparent speeding violation. Kirkland refused to stop, Haferman said, and fled on area highways until he drove through a number of backyards of some homes on the Tower Hill Pass.

Haferman continued, saying that Kirkland then drove straight into a nearby cornfield, where after about 100 yards, he got stuck and tried to flee on foot. He managed to get to Cold Spring Road where he was found walking along the shoulder of the road. He was arrested in that area shortly afterward.
