Waukesha Woman Accused of Stealing $23K in Lottery Tickets

A Waukesha woman is facing felony charges after she allegedly stole more than $23,000 in scratch off lottery tickets in order to supplement her income after he hours were cut at an area gas station.

Melinda Slick, 27, was charged in Waukesha County Circuit Court on Thursday with one count of theft of more than $10,000 from a business setting. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and $25,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint:

On Oct. 21, police were called to Waukesha Fuel Stop after one of the owners reported Slick had stolen $1,200 that day and was fired. Video surveillance showed her grab tickets and take them back to an office area where she scratched them off and threw out the losers.

About $859 in losing tickets were found inside the trash.

Police also reviewed an Oct. 13 surveillance tape where Slick spent almost her entire shift taking tickets and scratching them off. They were unable to determine how many tickets were stolen due to Slick taking large amounts at a time.

On Jan. 21 Slick was interviewed by police saying she took hundreds of tickets to supplement her income after her hours were cut at the gas station. She said she made between $500 and $600 from the tickets.

A total of $23,399 in lottery tickets were taken from the gas station.

She will make her initial appearance in court June 11.
