Freeway Shut Down For Hours
I-94 in Waukesha County was shut down for more than seven hours Tuesday afternoon into early Wednesday morning after authorities say the stretch of interstate was the scene of two officer-involved shootings and a standoff.
During a press conference held at the Waukesha County Sheriff's office Wednesday morning at 10 a.m., Sheriff Eric Severson said deputies were called to assist a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources officer who was pursuing a stolen vehicle out of the Town of Eagle at about 4:21 p.m. Tuesday.
"This was a very complex tactical situation. I certainly empathize with the community," he said. "The department of justice is still processing the crime scene and that it's a significant disruption to the community."
Severson said a deputy responding to the area saw the fleeing vehicle, a gray minivan. He continued, saying that the responding deputy saw a man behind the wheel point a firearm at the deputy. Severson said the deputy fired at the suspect.
Severson said the suspect then called the Waukesha County Communications Center, demanding to speak with a negotiator, and claiming that he was holding a woman hostage.
During the press conference Wednesday, Severson said that a standoff resulted, as the man refused to surrender for more than five hours. Police deployed tear gas later that evening, and deputies reported seeing the suspect flee the van with a female hostage being held at gunpoint. Severson said two tactical officers fired at the man, hitting him twice.
Severson said the woman fled police, ignoring deputies commands to stop. Severson said the woman struggled with officers, and managed to stab sheriff K9 officer Justice, causing significant injuries to the dog.
Severson said the dog was transported to an emergency vet for treatment, and is in recovery. Authorities also said the woman is being treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition. Severson also added that the man, who was shot twice, was in critical condition.
Video Shows Pursuit
The scene unfolded Tuesday before 5 p.m. According to a WISN-TV report, an employee at a local business said their office was asked to shelter in place due to a high-speed chase involving a man with a gun.
Authorities issued an emergency alert, advising motorists to steer clear of a stretch of I-94 between Highways F and P in Waukesha County. A flood of eyewitness videos began pouring into social media, including one that showed law enforcement officers throwing out spike strips in an attempt to disable a fleeing gray minivan.
Another video showed officers pursuing the van in a patrol vehicle. Audio from that video picked up two sharp sounds that could have been gunfire.
We have yet to hear how officers managed to resolve the situation late Tuesday and will update this story as new information becomes available Wednesday morning. Authorities are expected to release more information from the incident today.

Patrick Esser with the Waukesha County Sheriff's Department said late Tuesday evening that there was an officer-involved shooting "this afternoon on Highway 67 over I-94 and a subsequent one" later in the evening.
Eyewitness were aghast at what they saw Tuesday. "As soon as we came within viewing distance of everything, there were cops everywhere," said Simon Lezcano in a FOX 6-TV report.
