MILWAUKEE, WI — Citing the mistreatment of thousands of immigrant children on U.S. soil in detention centers, a civil rights organization staged a demonstration outside Republican Sen. Ron Johnson's Milwaukee office Friday morning.

Demonstrators filled the sidewalks outside Johnson's office, carrying signs that read "Senator Johnson, Have a Heart," "My skin is not a probable cause," and carrying aloft a cage with two infant dolls inside.

According to organizers with LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, organizers presented the Senator with dozens of "babies in cages" at his Milwaukee office after LULAC officials say Johnson refused to meet with their organization.

Organizers with LULAC said they tried meeting with Johnson over the thousands of immigrant and refugee children being held in detention centers across the southern U.S.

Johnson chairs the U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. LULAC officials say his position on the committee could affect changes in these detention centers.

"He oversees the cages where these children are kept. He can do something about it. We are asking to find a bipartisan solution for immigration reform and he's refused to meet with us," Garcia said in a CBS 58 report.

After seeing a photo of a photo of a father and child drowned on the Rio Grande, Johnson spoke emotionally during June 26 hearing on migrant exploitation about the need to find a solution.

“I don’t want to see another picture like that on the U.S. border. I hope that picture alone will catalyze this Congress, this Senate, this committee to do something,” Johnson said during the hearing.
