Chief MacGillis spent more than 25 years with the Milwaukee Police Department, where he worked in patrol, investigations, and communications and retired as a Police Captain and Director of Training at the Milwaukee Police Academy.

When advised of his selection, Chief MacGillis stated he was β€œhumbled and proud” and is excited to join the team at the Wauwatosa Police Department who share a commitment to public service and excellence in serving Wauwatosa. β€œPublic safety is a shared responsibility,” he added. β€œWe are here to serve and protect and community safety is our top priority. This, however, does not happen in a vacuum and that responsibility is shared by community, government and the police department. I will work towards building community trust while problem solving and reducing crime for all citizens.”

Also speaking at the ceremony today was Mayor Dennis R. McBride. β€œThe selection process included a national search, community listening sessions, and public input,” he said. β€œUnder state law, the Wauwatosa Police & Fire Commission had total authority over the hiring of our police chief. Nevertheless, I was confident the PFC would choose a chief who is a good communicator, works well with elected officials, is conversant with the latest policing standards and initiatives, and understands that the Wauwatosa Police Department serves both Wauwatosa and the broader Milwaukee community, which are becoming ever more diverse. I believe the PFC has accomplished that goal. After he was chosen, I met with Chief MacGillis to discuss our visions for the City. In every way, he satisfied me that he will be a strong and open leader who will work well with elected officials and all segments of our metropolitan community.”

Chief MacGillis has a passion for community engagement, transparency in law enforcement, and the development of law enforcement professionals through training and evidence-based practices. He is excited to get to work, bringing a new vision and positive updates to a great police department with many strengths.
