A pro bono speaker’s bureau in Milwaukee - FreeSpeakers.org - proves that some things in life are indeed free.

"Jim Bohn gave a presentation at our networking group, Open for Business (OFB), and it was great," said David Glazer, founder of OFB. "The talk was informative, fun and extremely well received by our group. I want to thank Jim and FreeSpeakers.org for the opportunity."

Open for Business meets in West Allis but according to Glazer, it serves the Metro Milwaukee area, and he expects to be opening more chapters in SE Wisconsin soon.

The pro bono speaker's bureau is a resource in Milwaukee and its suburbs for groups and organizations that need speakers. The bureau has more than 30 local speakers with more than 50 different topics available.

"All speakers present programs at no cost," said Andy Richardson, director of FreeSpeakers.org. "This is a community service project that is 100 percent free to groups that have limited (or no) budgets. Groups include Chambers of Commerce, libraries, Rotary and Kiwanis groups, special interest clubs, lunch 'n learns, church groups, retirement communities, women's clubs, men's clubs, etc."

A sampling of topics and speakers available to Milwaukee groups:

  • Just About But Not Quite by Dick Cavenaugh, MLB Umpire, Pilot, Author
  • Everything I learned about leadership by playing in a rock and roll band by Jim Bohn, PhD., Principal Consultant and CEO, ProAxios
  • Stop Bullying with a Saving Sadie Presentation by Joal Derse-Dauer, Saving Sadie
  • High School Hot Buttons – Mental Health, Bullying, Self Esteem and More by Julie-Anne Braun, Owner, Inspired by Change, LLC
  • Seven Deadly Sins of Estate Planning by Joe Maier, O'Neil, Cannon, Hollman, DeJong & Laing S.C.
  • Deskercise, Get Fit While You Sit by Jeremy Bria, D.C., Doctor of Chiropractic, Pure Family Chiropractic
  • Behaviors of Change: Mastering Personal Change to Achieve Your Dreams by Tim Christian, Author / VP of Facilities Management, Goodwill Industries

Again, there is no charge to any group, not from the speaker and not from the bureau. What’s in it for the speakers? They are motivated by the opportunity to teach, hone speaking skills, make contacts, convey a message, give back to the community and frequently, all of the above.

“Many people don’t understand why we would spend time on a community service project that doesn’t make money,” Richardson said, “but we are rewarded with loads of contacts, friendships and good will. It's more than enough."
