Dems Launch New Legislative Session With COVID-19 Response Bill

Today, the Assembly Democrats introduced a COVID-19 response bill that focuses on protecting the health and safety of Wisconsin families and setting up our state for economic recovery. This bill includes the Healthcare Heroes Act, a bill to protect and support frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic that State Representative Robyn Vining (D-Wauwatosa) authored and introduced this summer. This bill also includes provisions from Governor Evers’ COVID-19 proposal from November. Rep. Vining issued the following statement in response:

“Now is the time to hit the ground running, to set the tone to cast partisanship aside, and focus on swift action on behalf of the Wisconsin people in a time of tremendous need. A new legislative session is a time of hope, and also a time for change and action — myself and my Democratic colleagues are ready to swiftly pass legislation that will help protect the people of Wisconsin from this deadly pandemic, and support them in economic recovery. This bill creates a bridge to stability and recovery as we fight forward, together.

“We need to fight for the survival of our small businesses, we need to support our frontline healthcare workers, we need to come alongside our schools and childcare providers, we need fixes to the unemployment system, and we need to do absolutely everything we can to protect the health and safety of each and every Wisconsinite from COVID-19.

“It is a new day, and the time for action is now. Wisconsinites are relying on us to battle the virus, not each other. We have lost almost 5,000 lives in our state to COVID-19. We must act now to save lives and ensure Wisconsinites have the support they need to weather this storm. Forward together.”
