Want To Smoke Pot Legally? Question Will Be On November Ballot

Voters will be asked whether Wisconsin should legalize recreational marijuana on the Nov. 6 ballot.

MILWAUKEE COUNTY, WI — Voters in Milwaukee County will be asked whether Wisconsin should legalize recreational marijuana on the Nov. 6 ballot.

The advisory referendum was approved 15-1 by the Milwaukee County Board Thursday.

The advisory referendum reads: "Do you favor adults 21 years of age and older to engage in the personal use of marijuana, while also regulating commercial marijuana-related activities, and imposing a tax on the sale of marijuana?"

If the referendum passes, it doesn't mean that people will be able to legally smoke marijuana in Milwaukee County the following day. Rather, this ballot question is advisory in nature and is designed to put pressure on the state legislature to get moving on passing a recreational marijuana bill.

According to a Journal Sentinel report Thursday, Supervisor John Weishan Jr. of West Allis was the advisory referendum's sponsor. He said it is necessary in order to convince the legislature to take action on legalizing marijuana while also setting up a taxing mechanism.

Ten U.S. states already permit marijuana use on a recreational basis: California, Nevada, Colorado, Alaska, Vermont Massachusetts, Washington, Oregon and Maine.

A July 2016 Marquette University Law School recorded that 59 percent of Wisconsin voters were in favor of legalizing marijuana.
