A man identified as King Rick of the Original Black Panthers in Milwaukee issued a statement regarding this incident and others in which he says black teens and adults are facing discrimination. "For too often are we being subjected to racial profiling in this mall, far too often," he said online. "Those dynamics have to change and we're here to demand that they change."
Police in Wauwatosa came out shortly after the incident happened and the video began circulating online, that the video showing an officer appearing to punch a suspect in the face is only part of the story during an incident Friday afternoon at Mayfair Mall.
According to a Fox 6 report, police said a group of five teens were causing a disturbance at the mall when mall security asked them to leave.
Wauwatosa police later arrested one of the suspects, but not before one eyewitness recorded a video of a physical altercation between the suspect and police at the time he was taken into custody in the mall parking lot.
According to Wauwatosa Police, they received a call from Mayfair Mall security just after 4:30 p.m. requesting police assistance related to five suspects inside the mall acting disorderly and causing a disturbance. Officers responded and one of the initial officers on scene located several of them in the parking lot.
According to police, the responding officer attempted to speak to the suspects involved and determine what was happening.
"We have been made aware of a video that is circulating on social media related to this incident.
This video shows only a small segment of the interaction between the suspect and the officer," Captain Brian E. Zalewski said. "We are reviewing additional video that shows the officer initially attempting to speak with the male, and the suspect refusing to stop and speak with the officer. Further, the suspect began to physically fight with the officer who was attempting to legally detain the suspect."
Wauwatosa police say they are taking the incident seriously and are reviewing the use-of-force incident. The report stated that the suspect was arrested and cited for resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and battery.
