Laramie County Community College Athletics Announce First Class Of Inductees Into Golden Eagles Hall Of Fame

Cheyenne, Wyoming – With an athletics history rich in national championships, stellar student-athletes, and coaches achieving extraordinary success, Laramie County Community College is proud to announce the first inductees into the Golden Eagles Hall of Fame.

The honorees and their accomplishments with LCCC are:

• 1986-87 men’s basketball team: This is LCCC’s only basketball team to win the NJCAA Region IX championship. The team also competed in the NJCAA National Tournament, and four players from the squad went on to play Division I basketball for the NCAA.

• Woody Halverson, men’s basketball coach, 1971-1992: The first men’s basketball coach at LCCC, Halverson also served as an instructor and athletic director, in addition to starting the booster club. He coached the 1986-1987 team, and finished his time at LCCC with 318 wins.
• Todd Suhn, rodeo athlete, 1993-1994: Suhn helped the rodeo team qualify for the College
  National Finals Rodeo during both his years at LCCC. As an individual athlete, he qualified for CNFR in calf roping, steer wrestling, and tie-down roping.

• Ron Tate, men’s basketball player, 1985-1987: A member of the 1986-87 regional championship team, Tate was the first All-American in LCCC history. When he finished his Golden Eagle career, he was the second leading scorer in the college’s history, including an average of 21 points per game in his sophomore season.

• Russell “Pinky” Walter, rodeo coach, 1986-1995: A beloved coach, Walters brought more than 600 students to LCCC. Elevating the credibility and presence of rodeo on campus, he helped coordinate numerous rodeo events at LCCC as well for high schools and colleges as well as professional circuit events.

Selections were made through nominations from the community, which were reviewed and
selected by a committee compiled by the college.

Because of the current pandemic, no official plans have been made yet for a ceremony
to recognize this group.
