JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL — A 10-year-old child in Fairfield was shot in what law encorcement officials are saying was an accident. The incident occurred Feb. 7 just after 10 p.m in the 300 block of 67th Street .

Deputy Chief David Agee of the Jefferson County Sherrif's Office said the child's parents reported that the child went outside and came back in injured minutes later. The child's injuries are not life-threatening, Agee said.

"After follow-up interviews and investigation we have determined that the child was shot by accident," Agee said Monday afternoon. "Those involved admitted that a 16-year-old boy who lives in the neighborhood was playing with a gun when it fell and discharged striking the child in the back. This appears to be an accident and no criminal charges will be pursued."
