Sensors and message boards now warn of approaching trains and suggest detours, with early data showing fewer vehicles stuck and shorter waits. Officials say it's a cheaper near-term fix while costly overpasses remain long-term goals. 
2. Birmingham Data Center Lawsuit Set for March 2027 Trial (abc3340.com) — Plans for a proposed Birmingham data center are headed to a non-jury trial in Jefferson County Circuit Court on March 8, 2027, with key legal deadlines set through early next year. Developers, including Lakeshore Data Center and Nebius, along with the City of Birmingham, are facing an amended complaint from nearby residents as both sides prepare evidence and expert testimony.
3. New Birmingham Museum of Art Installation Explores City's Histories of Steel, Labor, Land (birminghamtimes.com) — A major new textile installation at the Birmingham Museum of Art is transforming the lobby with imagery drawn from the city's steel, labor, and civil rights history. New York artist Christopher Myers created "The Slow Can Beat the Quick" specifically for Birmingham, weaving in stories from Vulcan to Bessemer's labor struggles; you can see it now through July 11, 2027.
4. Longtime Birmingham Radio Personality Binnie Myles Dies (abc3340.com) — Birmingham is mourning longtime radio voice and community advocate Binnie Myles, whose family says she died suddenly this week. Known for her work on local airwaves and with the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, she was remembered by Mayor Randall Woodfin as a civil rights champion who used her platform to uplift overlooked communities across the city.
5. GBHS to move into new Oxmoor-area facility (birminghamwatch.org) — Jefferson County has approved moving the Greater Birmingham Humane Society's animal control operations from near the airport to a new Sydney Drive facility, even as GBHS continues suing the City of Birmingham and Nebius over a nearby hyperscale data center. Commissioners also celebrated new leadership at the G. Ross Bell Juvenile Detention Center and greenlit major U.S. Steel and Drummond industrial investments expected to bring jobs and tax benefits.
