32-Year-Old Man Killed, Child Injured In Birmingham Shooting

A shooting in west Birmingham Saturday resulted in a 7-year-old child injured and a 32-year-old man dead.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — A 7-year-old child is injured and a 32-year-old man is dead after a shooting Saturday in Birmingham. The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. at 1221 Gulfport Street.

Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department said officers arrived to find the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the hand. The child was transported to Children’s Hospital. Upon further investigation, officers discovered a male victim inside the residence on the floor suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim, identified as 32-year-old Roderick Smith, was pronounced deceased on scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue.

Mauldin said the preliminary investigation suggests that after the incident occurred, the child went to a neighbor’s home to summon help. Detectives have limited information in this investigation and no suspects are custody.

Detectives have not established a clear motive in this homicide.
