📰 News we're reading
• 1 Dead In AL As Isaias Leaves Damage, Outages Across State (patch.com) — Birmingham residents are waking up to serious damage after Hurricane Isaias, including a fatality in the Huffman area where a falling tree crushed a home. Jefferson County officials report widespread power outages, downed trees and blocked roads, with thousands still without electricity as crews work through difficult conditions to restore service and clear debris across the region.

• Birmingham water utility prices rising in 2027 for most customers (al.com) — Birmingham-area water customers should expect higher bills in 2027 as Central Alabama Water moves to a universal base rate that will raise most monthly charges by about $3.50 to $4.90, with an additional rate hike still under discussion. Birmingham board members Jarvis Patton and Sheila Tyson opposed the base-rate change, which follows a state-driven overhaul that shifted control of the utility away from city appointees.

• Former Birmingham mayor's aide ordered to show documents proving she was eligible to seek office (al.com) — A former aide to Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin who defeated an incumbent in a State House primary has been ordered by a Jefferson County judge to turn over payroll and bank records proving she'd left city employment before running. The case hinges on Birmingham's Mayor/Council Act, which bars mayoral appointees from seeking office, and could determine who ultimately represents District 60.
