Alabama Confirms More Than 6,200 COVID-19 Cases In 2 Weeks
The Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed 6,275 new cases of COVID-19 in the last 14 days.
MONTGOMERY, AL — Alabama COVID-19 cases have spiked in June, as the Alabama Department of Public Health has confirmed 6,275 new cases of the virus in the last 14 days. The state saw a record 849 new cases on Wednesday alone.
Total, the state has confirmed 23,333 cases of the virus, with 764 deaths. In the last two weeks, 86,581 tests have been administered statewide, which makes up a third of the total tests since mid-March when the state started testing.

Birmingham mayor Randall Woodfin on Friday addressed the spike in COVID-19 cases as it relates to the possibility of shutting down businesses again.
"What we now have to do is be extremely pragmatic," Woodfin said. "The number one job has been to save lives, then save livelihoods. We may be in a position to see an outright revolt if we shut things down again. We need to shift our public communication to protect the most vulnerable."

"This pandemic hit us very quickly," said Sen. Doug Jones in a joint news conference with Woodfin. "Randall had a very good handle on it early, I think we will be much better prepared in the fall and if we see more surges. We are going to see more hot spots over the summer."
One hot spot that has continued to produce new cases of the virus daily is Montgomery County, Which has confirmed 955 new cases of COVID-19 in the last two weeks, bringing the county's total number of cases to 2,543, inching closer to Mobile County's state-leading total of 2,623 cases.
Jefferson County has confirmed 579 new cases in the last 14 days, bringing the county's total to 2,339 vases.
In the last week, the number of new cases reported daily in Alabama:
- June 5: 640 new cases
- June 6: 455 new cases
- June 7: 430 new cases
- June 8: 488 new cases
- June 9: 562 new cases
- June 10: 849 new cases
- June 11: 720 new cases
