Alabama Tops 9,000 Coronavirus Cases, 360 Deaths

Alabama saw a decrease in new coronavirus cases Wednesday, after one of the worst days since the beginning of the pandemic.

MONTGOMERY, AL — After one of the most active days of new coronavirus cases in the state since the beginning of the pandemic, the state of Alabama reported a significant decrease in new cases for Wednesday. The Alabama Department of Public Health reported 253 new cases for Wednesday, a large drop from the nearly record-setting total of 331 new cases Tuesday.

Thursday evening, the state's coronavirus case total was listed at 9,046, with 369 deaths. Thus far, 1,188 patients gave been hospitalized in Alabama from the virus. the state has administered 116,319 tests.

Gov. Kay Ivey's "safer-at-home"order is set to expire next week, and without a steady decrease in new cases of the virus, officials will have to assess the next steps to be taken in the state for the remainder of the month.

Jefferson County reported 23 new cases of the virus in the last 24 hours, and 3 three more deaths. In the last week, Montogmery County has seen the largest surge in cases percentage-wise, while Mobile County continues to pace the state in both total cases and fatalities.

Here are the counties with the most confirmed coronavirus cases as of Thursday afternoon:

  • Mobile County: 1,343 confirmed cases; 10,396 total tests; 77 deaths
  • Jefferson County: 1,059 confirmed cases; 18,443 total tests; 56 deaths
  • Montgomery County: 496 confirmed cases; 3,632 total tests; 13 deaths
  • Marshall County: 485 confirmed cases; 3,377 total tests; 8 deaths
  • Lee County: 414 confirmed cases; 3,461 total tests; 30 deaths
