Alabama Nears 80,000 Total Coronavirus Cases

After a promising drop in new COVID-19 cases reported Sunday, Alabama added more than 1,700 new cases to its total Monday.

MONTGOMERY, AL — After a promising decrease in new COVID-19 cases reported Sunday, the Alabama Department of Public Health confirmed 1,778 new cases of the virus Monday. Alabama had 1,037 new cases reported Sunday, the lowest number of new cases reported in a day in nearly three weeks.

The state is approaching 80,000 total cases, as the ADPH reported 79,129 cases of the virus in Monday's report. The state has confirmed 23,415 new COVID-19 cases in the last two weeks.

Alabama also added 18 COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths from the virus to 1,446, with another 45 deaths listed as "probable" from COVID-19. Of the 79,129 cases of the virus in Alabama, 32,510 patients are presumed to have recovered. The state reports 1,505 coronavirus-related hospitalizations currently.

The most new cases were reported in Mobile County Monday, followed by Jefferson and Montgomery counties.

Four counties reported triple-digit totals for new cases Monday:

  • Mobile County: 168 new cases; 7,361 total
  • Jefferson County: 162 new cases; 10,420 total
  • Montgomery County: 126 new cases; 5,768 total
  • Tuscaloosa County: 100 new cases; 3,636 total
